In Schiaparelli and Sabyasachi Couture

Comment image 42

With no Priyanka or Deepika attending, all eyes were on Natasha at the Met Gala who wore a custom Sabyasachi sari with a sculpted bustier from Schiaparelli Couture and dripping in jewels from Sabyasachi’s fine line.

We’ve been waiting for a sari sighting like for years, one where the pallu is presented with a dramatic train. Loved finally seeing the sari presented that way. Having said that though, now that we’ve seen the red carpet pics of Natasha vs the heavily touched up ones on IG, am a bit disappointed by the sari itself. I understand that one wouldn’t want the sari to compete with that delish bustier but I found it a bit dull. Instead of being the main lead, it became more a supporting cast and that was a disappointment. The makeup also was underwhelming.

What did you all think?

P.S. The pics take a second to load.

    • Hey, I don’t think har taste is poor…. It’s OTT over OTT but for the Met Gala this seems to work perfectly fine. Infact I think she’s one of the few who got the memo right

    • Interesting comment that I read on her IG caption with her picture – the Met Gala theme (Gilded Glamour) relevance here is that while mankind makes progress in space which I guess is the orbitted head gear, women are still restricted within the armor of a suit she sports 🙂 I thought, it kinda fashionably made sense …if not anything, giving her team brownie points for overthinking through the rather ambiguous theme and come up with a fashionable/ impactful result!

  1. the contrast b/w the red carpet and the IG pix is just astonishing
that said, and all the excess and extra aside, natasha’s born for the met gala red carpet. dunno if anyone knew her or why she was there but that’s quite an emphatic appearance. good for her to put a saree up there, nicely reimagined.
re: the headgear, someone said it’s her way of keeping off the virus when her husband’s vaccines fail and now i can’t look at it any other way.

  2. Love it all including the muted colours (if I may call gold dull ..lol). Especially love the styling and her confidence.
I for one don’t see much difference in her red carpet & IG look.

P.s. always wondered, how these ladies seat through the evening with these clothing
P.p.s. Also wondered, why is the theme of Met Gala so complicated, that no matter what you wear it can always fall in its loose definition

  3. Don’t know what’s worse, that corset over a saree, or the saree all over/under a corset. She looks good for the theme, all dramatic. I guess we’ll have to wait to see Indian stars do a classy art self like Blake.

  4. Are you kidding?! I have no complains here! She managed to put saree out for display at the MET GALA and HOW! Totally loving it.

Trust Nat P to give off a larger than sighting. I’m amazed that she is not overwhelmed by all that jewelry. Keeping the saree and jewels muted and letting the bustier talk made all the difference. Loving a dramatic look to the core after a really long time. 10/10 for me.

  5. I normally don’t like Natasha’s style, and don’t understand it, but I really like this! Actually she looks so much nicer in the red carpet pics than the insta ones.

  7. I loved the sighting. Glad someone repping India and that too brilliantly.
I am highly highly disappointed that she is not in the Vogue’s list of Red carpet looks (looked at all 208 of them). Feels a bit biased to me.

  8. Love it! A more golden hue on the sari would have been even better – maybe it’s the lighting not rendering the colors as they were.
And yes, makeup could have been much better.
Another nitpick – maybe different earrings – these clash with all that’s going on up there.
Even so – major love! Drama done right!
I like the red carpet pics wayy better than her Insta pics

    • Would just want to change the makeup and hairstyle. Otherwise, she’s awesome here. I wonder what Rekha would bring if she were to be on the MET gala RC. In her younger days, she’s done some fantastic renderings of the saree, Indian jewellery while looking totally from outside the planet – quite successfully. I wish she got a chance now.

  9. The Schiaparelli bustier is an art piece that needs a muted dress/sari and jewellery. Bella Hadid wearing the Schiaparelli lungs necklace worked because she let the necklace do all the work. This look doesn’t work. The Sari is ok but all the garish jewellery is just getting in the way of the bustier. Ms. Poonawalla is not a fashion icon or celebrity of note. She is the wife of a very rich man and there were many like her at the MET who warranted no attention from the American press.

P.S. no offence but i really want to know what the saree draper has done so extra ordinarily that she flew all the way to there for this

  13. She doesnt look like Natasha at all, something done to the face that I cant quite put a finger on. So it end up making her like yet another social media IG-er vs the lovely looks she naturally possesses.
Sighting wise – she captured the Met essence pretty well, loved the saree and bustier, nails and the drama. I did not like her straw hair, wish she had kept it brunette, nothing wrong with that and didnt like the hair band either. Minor gripes.

Sputnik popped in my head when I saw the orbital gear around and I am unable to shake that off…

  14. I love the structure part of the idea… saree, bustier, accessories everything. Just wish the saree is a rich deeper monocolored one, the current color looks washed out with that bustier.

    • After I read this, I imagined this with the saree a deep red or a blue. Might have been more impactful but I get that she was going for the whole golden look.

  15. Love this!! We finally see a saree at the MET, was high effing time! She nailed the theme and how and let’s face it, her maximalism and penchant for the OTT make her the perfect muse for such an original look that could have easily overwhelmed even the most striking women. She owns the look and how!

Also, whilst I agree that the whole attire most definitely looks umpteen times better in the Insta photoshoot, doesn’t that apply to nearly every celebrity’s red-carpet/diwali/wedding/birthday party appearances?? Yes, the colour and ‘goldenness’ of the look is most impactful in the social media posts, but you can’t deny she looked pretty god damn stunning on the red carpet as well.

  16. Why do I get the feeling that you guys are paid to write good things about natasha!
If you felt the saree was more of a supporting cast…why would you say you have been waiting for such looks for years?!

    • Please reread the part: “We’ve been waiting for a sari sighting like for years, one where the pallu is presented with a dramatic train.” Also linked to Deepika’s Cannes look to emphasize what we mean.

  17. Saree for American gilded age? She could have worn this saree for Prince’s dinner gala and that black Balenciaga with all these sabya jewels for MET which would have been perfect. Could have worn corset for any other occasion. She doesn’t really need theme events to dress up.

  18. I don’t have the high level of fashion IQ required to have an opinion on this so I’ll just comment on how envious I am of that tiny waist and also these pics were the first time that I’ve ever seen Natty Poo’s teeth!

  19. difference b/w IG & red carpet pictures are clearly so different though i love her look but may be saree or corset should be in a similar color weould have made this look so much impactful

  20. I’m no fashion expert, this look meets the theme to the T, love the gilded bustier, the jewels are exquisite. And I love an Indian look anytime. And it ends there. There is no color contrast, it’s the same shade of dull brown – the saree, the hair, washing her out. The jewels could have had a deeper color or a contrast color saree (burgundy or any other deep jewel colors or even white) could have been so good. As is it’s dull. The only thing I liked here is the unique bustier and her armband jewel! Closeup she may look great but from a distance the subtle colors are not popping enough.

  21. Love it! Quirky enough, an Indian vibe (agree color could be a tad bit more vibrant) … most of the looks at the gala are forgettable. While quirkiness is subjective, glad to see this look ! Her team did her good and she carried it off well!
